The First 7 Days After Launch: Critical ASO Strategy for New Apps

Your launch window is crucial. Here is the day-by-day playbook I use to maximize visibility and downloads in the first week.

The Launch Window Nobody Talks About

When you submit your app, Apple and Google give you a brief "honeymoon period."

During this window, the algorithms are watching closely:

  • How quickly do people download?
  • What's the engagement rate?
  • Are people rating and reviewing?
  • Strong performance in the first 7 days can set you up for long-term success. Weak performance can bury you for months.

    I've launched 6 apps. Here's my day-by-day playbook.

    Before Launch: The Preparation Phase

    48 Hours Before

    Finalize your ASO assets:

  • Title with primary keyword
  • Subtitle with secondary keywords
  • All 10 screenshots uploaded
  • App preview video (if applicable)
  • Keywords field optimized (iOS)
  • Prepare your launch announcements:

  • Email draft for your list
  • Social media posts scheduled
  • Reddit/community posts ready
  • Press outreach if applicable
  • Line up your early adopters:

  • Friends and family who will download Day 1
  • Beta testers who should upgrade
  • Anyone who promised a review
  • 24 Hours Before

    Final checks:

  • All links working?
  • Screenshots correct?
  • Description proofread?
  • Pricing correct?
  • In-app purchases configured?
  • Mental preparation:

  • Things will go wrong. Accept it now.
  • You won't go viral. That's okay.
  • This is Day 1 of a marathon, not a sprint.
  • Day 1: Launch Day

    Morning (First 6 Hours)

    Monitor, don't panic:

  • Check App Store Connect / Google Play Console
  • Verify the app is live and searchable
  • Test the download flow yourself
  • Execute your launch plan:

  • Send the email to your list
  • Post on social media
  • Share in relevant communities (Reddit, Discord, Slack)
  • Important: Don't spam. One genuine post per community. Quality over quantity.

    Evening

    Check initial metrics:

  • How many downloads?
  • Any crash reports?
  • Any reviews (good or bad)?
  • Respond immediately to any issues:

  • Crash? Hotfix.
  • Negative review? Reply.
  • Bug report? Acknowledge.
  • The algorithms watch your responsiveness.

    Day 2: Momentum Building

    Focus: Drive Downloads

The algorithm is watching download velocity. More downloads = better ranking = more organic downloads.

    Actions:

  • Follow up with anyone who said they'd download but hasn't
  • Post in 2-3 more communities (different from Day 1)
  • Reach out to any bloggers or journalists on your list
  • Focus: First Reviews

Reviews are crucial for conversion AND ranking.

    Actions:

  • Personally ask 5-10 people to leave a review
  • NOT fake reviews — real users who love your app
  • Be specific: "Could you mention [feature] in your review?"
  • Day 3: Analyze and Adjust

    Check Your Data

By Day 3, you have enough data to see patterns:

  • Which keywords are you ranking for?
  • What's your conversion rate? (impressions → downloads)
  • Where are downloads coming from?
  • Make Adjustments

If conversion is low (under 20%):

  • Your screenshots aren't compelling
  • Your first screenshot isn't clear
  • Your icon doesn't stand out
  • If impressions are low:

  • Your keywords aren't matching searches
  • Your category might be wrong
  • You need more external traffic
  • If downloads but low engagement:

  • Onboarding might be confusing
  • The app isn't matching expectations
  • Technical issues are driving people away
  • Day 4: Content Push

    Create Supplementary Content

Now that your app is live, create content that links back:

  • Blog post: "Why I built [App Name]"
  • Twitter/X thread about the problem you solve
  • YouTube video or short demo
  • Engage with Early Users

  • Reply to every review (even positive ones)
  • Respond to every support email personally
  • Join conversations about your app category
  • Day 5: Optimize Based on Data

    Keywords

By now, you can see which keywords you're ranking for. Adjust:

  • Double down on keywords where you rank #5-15 (room to grow)
  • Drop keywords where you rank #100+ (too competitive)
  • Add new long-tail keywords based on what's working
  • Screenshots

If your conversion rate is below expectations:

  • Your first screenshot needs work
  • Test a new headline
  • Make the value proposition clearer
  • With , you can regenerate screenshots in minutes, not hours.Shotsy

    Day 6: Community Building

    Focus: Sustainable Growth

The launch spike is fading. Now you need sustainable channels.

    Actions:

  • Start building an email list (even if small)
  • Create a simple landing page for your app
  • Set up a feedback mechanism (in-app or external)
  • Prepare for Week 2

  • What worked this week? Do more of it.
  • What didn't work? Stop wasting time.
  • What new channels can you try?
  • Day 7: Review and Plan

    Metric Review

    Document your Week 1 results:

  • Total downloads
  • Conversion rate
  • Average rating
  • Top keywords by ranking
  • Top traffic sources
  • Week 2 Planning

    Priorities for Week 2:

  • Fix any technical issues users reported
  • Implement one high-impact feature request
  • Continue ASO optimization (keywords, screenshots)
  • Try one new marketing channel
  • The Numbers to Aim For

    Week 1 Benchmarks (Indie Apps)

    Downloads:

  • 100-500 = Normal for unknown app
  • 500-2000 = Good with some promotion
  • 2000+ = Great launch or existing audience
  • Conversion Rate:

  • Under 10% = Problem with store listing
  • 10-25% = Average
  • 25-40% = Good
  • 40%+ = Excellent
  • Rating:

  • Under 4.0 = Address issues immediately
  • 4.0-4.5 = Solid foundation
  • 4.5+ = Competitive advantage
  • Common Week 1 Mistakes

    Mistake 1: No Launch Plan

"I'll just upload it and see what happens."

Without a plan, you waste your honeymoon period.

    Mistake 2: Spam Launching

Posting in 20 communities on Day 1 with the same message.

Communities hate this. You'll get banned and hurt your reputation.

    Mistake 3: Ignoring Feedback

Users give you gold: bug reports, feature requests, frustrations.

If you don't listen in Week 1, they won't come back.

    Mistake 4: Changing Everything

Made a change and downloads dropped? Panic-change everything else?

Change one thing at a time. Measure. Then change the next thing.

    Mistake 5: Comparing to Unicorns

"This other app got 100K downloads in Week 1!"

Most apps don't. Focus on YOUR growth trajectory.

  • The Long Game

Week 1 matters, but it's not everything.

I've seen apps with weak launches become hits after 6 months of consistent optimization.

I've seen apps with great launches fade because the developer stopped caring.

The first 7 days are important. The next 7 years are more important.

Build something people want. Keep improving. Stay patient.
